Domaine des Granits Muscadet Sèvre-et-Maine Sur Lie 'Les Noëlles' 2023

The 4ha Clos de Noëlles is well exposed, lying at the highest point of the village of Maisdon-sur-Sèvre, aiding ripening and giving it protection from frost, one of the key risks in the area. It is still surrounded by ancient stone walls, and locals say it has been a well regarded vineyard for several hundred years. It’s soils are a complex mix of broken granite over clay, quartz, and mica, while the sub soil is Granit de Clisson, a plutonic rock which fractures easily, allowing the vine’s roots to grow through it. The vines are currently between 8 and 40 year’s old.
The 2023 is 100% Melon de Bourgogne. Gentle pressing. Natural fermentation. No malolactic fermentation to retain freshness and tension. Aged for 9 months on fine lees. Lovely nose of white currant, a little peach, and a sense of cool sea-breeze freshness, there’s almost a touch of salt here! The palate is textured and concentrated, with white peach, currant and bracing citrus acidity. It is mineral and salty and persistent, with grippy extract and plenty of tension and energy. Initially it is focused and direct, but with time it opens up to show layers of stone fruit and that almost alkaline sensation which the best Muscadet have. Perfect with oysters or other shellfish, Ceviche or Sushi.
