Grape: Mission - the oldest grape in CA!

520 cases produced

We did a blind tasting with this wine and turned our heads, while we learnt a little bit about Sabelli-Frisch, who works closely with like-minded growers and farmers all over California to find the best sites and expressions of the varieties he loves to work with

From the wine  maker Sabelli-Frisch:

Old world wines in the new world, focusing on varieties with a long history in CA. Naturally fermented, no chemicals or additives. Minimal sulfites and maximum passion. Family owned.

BACKGROUND:

Mission is our signature grape and what started it all. Both for our winery, but also historically for wine in California. Misunderstood, maligned and mistreated for over 150 years - this is the oldest vinifera grape in the New World - is finally seeing renewed interest again. We love its peppery aromatics, herbal and strawberry notes. We think it has a great future ahead of it again and the critics seem to agree. “Marina” is our interpretation of it.

STYLE:

Slightly lighter in style than the 2018 vintage, but still with those elevated tannins and strawberry pepperiness. A wine made to serve just slightly chilled.

VINEYARD:
Somers Vineyard might have some of the oldest Mission vines in the US. Nobody knows exactly how old they are, but our best guess is turn of the century. That would be the last century, not this one. Some say less, but for sure they’re at least 50+ years old. They grow right next to the river in the Mokelumne River AVA, Lodi, California and are mostly dry farmed, since their roots reach deep.
