Country: Germany

Region: Mosel

Grape: Riesling

Perhaps our favorite Mosel producer.

From the importer:

Schaefer is absolutely, without question, one of the greatest producers in Germany. This is a benchmark for the Mosel and the wines are coveted not just by collectors, but by other growers.

If you’re new to all this, there’s a reason these wines are so beloved. Part of it is that they’re so scarce; the estate is all of 4.2 hectares with no desire to grow. Part of is the wines themselves; they’re silly delicious. You cannot be unhappy drinking these perfect ur-Mosel Rieslings.

93 points Wine & Spirits: " Austerely dry, this is all mineral notes and pithy lemon flavor, framed in crisp acidity. The wine has the energy of a sound wave-a weightless pulse, pushing toward another sip. (Feb 2022)"

92 points Stuart Pigott (JamesSuckling.com): "At first a touch of fresh cream. Then, as it aerates, fresh-herb and orange-peel notes develop. Very clean and pure on the light-to medium-bodied palate with wet-stone freshness. Bright, herbal finish with a hint of tannin. Drink now. Screw cap. (9/21/21)"

91 points Mosel Fine Wines: "The 2020er Graacher Riesling Trocken comes from the Himmelreich. It offers a beautifully airy and fragrant nose of white melon, starfruit, pear, cassis, fine herbs, wet stone, a dash of whipped cream, and smoky herbs. The wine is beautifully juicy and spicy on the palate and leaves a hugely mouthwatering feel in the airy finish. The aftertaste is subtly tart, animating, and elegant. This grandiose expression of dry Mosel lightness and freshness kicks far above the normal levels of village wines! Now-2032. (Jul 2021)"

91 points Stephan Reinhardt (Wine Advocate): "Schaefer's 2020 Graacher Riesling Trocken brings spring back onto your table. The nose is intense but bright, refined and weightless due to its floral slatey notes and bright fruit aromas. On the palate, this is a light, finessed and filigreed, very elegant, fresh and stimulating dry Riesling with delicate roundness and frisky mineral acidity. A gorgeous Riesling from Graach bottled with 11% alcohol. Screw cap. Tasted in September 2021. Drink: 2021-2035. (Sep 2021)"
