Winemaker Notes

Founded in 1987, Domaine Henri Magnien is a small family estate, with 6 hectares, located in Gevrey-Chambertin. After working side by side with his father Francois, Charles took over the domaine in 2012 and has taken the wines to new heights. He is considered to be one of the rising stars in Burgundy.

They have been using an old clone which is called Pinot Noir Magnien, aged between 70 to 100 years old, bringing unusual power and spiciness to the wines. The domaine has many of the very best vineyards, including Lavaux St-Jacques, Les Cazetiers and Ruchottes-Chambertin. In the past five years, they have converted 70-80% of their vineyards to organic viticulture.

'The sophomore 2021 Aloxe-Corton La Coutiere 1er Cru underwent no pigeage this year. It has a floral bouquet of rose-petal- and incense-infused red fruit, hints of aniseed emerging with time. The palate is medium-bodied with a slightly tarry entry, fine weight and acidity, fanning out nicely toward the also slightly tarry finish. This is a well-crafted Aloxe-Corton' - Vinous

"More crimson than purple, with a pleasing red fruit, a little blood orange too. Charles confirms a red soil, indicating iron oxide. Sweet but not clumsy fruit floods the palate, this is an elegant Aloxe (coming in fact from Ladoix) with few tannins. There was a good yield here and this wine was heated at the end of fermentation. Drink from 2025-2029. Tasted: November 2022" Jasper Morris, Inside Burgundy

"This is quite airy, indeed even perfumed, with its elegant and exceptionally pretty nose of essence of wild cherry, soft earth and a background hint of star anise. The polished, delicious and solidly concentrated middleweight flavors coat the palate with sappy dry extract that helps to buffer the lightly stony, austere and linear finish that displays excellent length. Lovely." - Allen Meadows, Burghound
